GUIDE · PREPARING A RIDE

How to prepare a bike ride: choose the right bike and know what to check

Setting off well prepared starts before you get on the bike: knowing what you are going to do, choosing the bike that fits best and checking what really matters. This guide offers a simple method that works whether you own one bike or several.

Pedalytics is in preparation and cannot be downloaded or used yet. This guide explains the approach it is being built around. Meet Pedalytics

Start with the plan

Three facts are enough: how far you will ride, over what terrain and in what conditions, such as rain or mud. With them you can anticipate what you will demand of your equipment.

Choose the bike that fits

If you own several bikes, the best one for a ride is not always the usual one. Think about terrain, climbing and the state of each setup: a bike whose drivetrain is already close to a check is not the best choice for a very demanding ride.

What to check before and after

  • Before: brake pads, chain and drivetrain, tyres and wheels.
  • After: clean and lubricate the drivetrain, especially after rain or mud.
  • Periodically: inspect parts that have no reliable interval.

How Pedalytics approaches it

Pedalytics' Prepare ride feature, still in preparation, follows three steps:

  1. Plan: distance, terrain and expected conditions.
  2. Compare: all your bikes against the same plan, to see which fits best and how much wear it adds.
  3. Ride with peace of mind: a short list of what really matters before and after the ride.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check before a bike ride?

At the very least, the brakes, chain and drivetrain, tyres and wheels. If rain or mud is forecast, pay particular attention to the brake pads.

How do I choose between two bikes for a route?

Compare both against the plan: terrain, climbing, conditions and the state of each setup. The one with the fresher equipment and the better fit for the terrain is usually the better choice.

Does Pedalytics decide for me?

No. It compares your bikes against the plan and gives you a short checklist; the decision is yours.
